June 5 -Tidbits


National Events:


1. Sumitra Mahajan unanimously elected speaker of 16th Lok Shaba ,becoming the second woman presiding officer of the lower house after her predecessor Meira Kumar.
She began her political career as a Corporator in Municipal Corporation,Indore in 1982.
She was addressed as 'Tai'(Sister).Sumitra Mahajan has never lost a Lok Sabha election since she was elected from Indore in 1989 and she is the longest-serving woman member in Parliament,winning the Lok Sabha elections for the record 8th time  (1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014).




2. Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) of Delhi was ranked as second best airport in the world in service quality among airports that handle 25 to 40 million passengers per annum (MPPA). This year IGI  rank dropped to  sixth position from fourth last year (2013) in global ranking among the best aiport in the world.Also ,IGI received the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) award for third time in row on 27th May 2014-Seoul-South Korea.

Other International Airports :
Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) -Mumbai in fifth postion among airports handling 5 to 40 MPPA category.
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) -Hyderabad in second position  in 5 to 15 MPPA category.


International Events:

1. World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on June 5 to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and planet Earth.It is run by the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP).
 2014 ,the event was hosted by Barbados, a small Caribbean island leading the way in solar energy.The  Caribbean island becomes the first Small Island  Developing State to host World Environment Day.
Slogan –‘Raise your voice not the sea level’
       Theme-‘Small Island Developing States and Climate Change’
       2015-hosting country –India with 
       Slogan-‘One World,One Environment’.



2. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was re-elected in the country's first presidential vote since its civil war broke out three years ago. Assad has won a landslide victory in presidential poll securing 88.7 percent of votes.This victory gives Assad a third seven-year term in the office .
